Math Block Two – Probability Unit

Monday, Tuesday AND Wednesday – students are working with a partner to create a probability game with specific parameters, they will design and build the game and calculate and show their work for the correct theoretical probability of winning, HOMEWORK – bring in necessary supplies each day for building the game

Thursday – MATH CARNIVAL, students will set up their games around the room and CHOICE students from other classes will come in to play!!

Friday – no math class due to ADSTG #3

Rocktastic Climbrific – climbing spring trip

Monday – NOTE – large coolers and water containers needed for the trip – 10 each, today’s focus is FOOD PLANNING: each cook group will work with help from an adult to create their menus and a grocery list for all meals on the trip, HOMEWORK – bring in labeled place setting for the trip

Tuesday – cook groups sit together and each person will write the menus and cook gear needed for each meal on the trip, discuss and make “commitment” to bring in necessary cook gear for the trip, create car groups, HOMEWORK – bring in labeled place setting and all cook gear for the trip

Wednesday – check and label all cook gear, label bins and organize all gear inside, circle share (with skits!) rocktastic research projects, HOMEWORK – bring in labeled place setting and any cook gear still needed for the trip

Thursday – all new “bucket relay” to simulate the dish washing process for the trip, careful review of the packing list and tips about packing for the trip

Friday – FOOD SHOPPING, cook groups will go with an adult to buy all necessary groceries for the trip, back at school, all food will be organized, labeled and packed in coolers and dry bins for the trip, final reminders about trip schedule and itinerary!!  HOMEWORK – pack and prepare to head out on our rocktastic trip!

Monday – introduce concept of probability with a game called match/no-match with coins, make predictions, play the game, keep track of results on data table, take notes on experimental and theoretical probability, HOMEWORK – # 1 – 5 p 13

Tuesday – review homework, “gee whiz, everyone wins” or do they?, play a guessing game involving colored blocks, whole group gathers results together in data table, analyze results and find experimental and theoretical probability, HOMEWORK – # 1 – 3 p 28 – 29

Wednesday – review homework, create bundles, play “making purple” with spinners, analyze results, find theoretical probability using counting tree strategy, HOMEWORK – none

Rocktastic Climbrific – climbing spring trip

Monday – students should have brought in STOVES AND TENTS!!!, please remember – tents needed for TOMORROW and stoves needed for WEDNESDAY, today we will start forming the three “official” climbing groups for the actual trip, kids will self select by writing their request and reasons for wanting a specific group, focus on FIRST AID with scenarios and notes in journals

Tuesday – TENT DAY!!!  head out to the field to build tents, label clearly, and check for “structural integrity”, if we come up “short”, we will need to keep working toward the goal of having a tent that works for each group before the trip, HOMEWORK – bring ALL COOK GEAR AND INGREDIENTS FOR THE MAC AND CHEESE COOK OFF TOMORROW

Wednesday – mac and cheese cook off!!!!, cook groups will set up stoves on tables outside and work together to make the most delicious mac and cheese to be judged by resident experts, the goal is for cook groups to work as a team including cooking and cleaning up

Thursday – ADSTG # 2, students need sack lunch and comfortable clothes for climbing at Movement gym and hiking Sanitas

Math Block Two – Bits and Pieces II (fraction operations)

Monday – start class with openers focused on adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions, hand out study guide to be started in class and finished as homework, HOMEWORK – portfolio reflections with evidence due tomorrow, finish study guide for Bits and Pieces II test (coming up Wednesday)

Tuesday – collect portfolio reflections with evidence, Bits and Pieces II test review game, HOMEWORK – be ready for the test tomorrow

Wednesday – Bits and Pieces II test, HOMEWORK – bring portfolios to class tomorrow for signatures, revise reflection if needed

Rocktastic Climbrific Spring Trip

Monday – NOTE:  two drivers still needed for this Friday’s field trip, start with “Oh Climber, My Climber” game – active, group shifting game with movements so that all kids get a chance to meet each other and work together, short read aloud relevant to the meaning of our spring trip, quick art lesson on how to make journal covers and then make them, HOMEWORK – stoves need to be brought in by this Friday (we need 10 total)

Tuesday – slide show with overview of our trip itinerary, explanation of research project – students will randomly select a specific animal and be responsible for general research about the animal, specific research on their climbing ability and what anatomical structure they use and a detailed drawing of that structure, research time in computer lab HOMEWORK – one page research project is due Monday 4/25, stoves need to be brought in by this Friday (we need 10 total)

Wednesday – put journals together with covers, pages, and cord, initiative to form groups and discuss topics related to the trip, HOMEWORK – one page research project is due Monday 4/25, stoves need to be brought in by this Friday (we need 10 total)

Thursday – split group into boys and girls (separate) and do “trading cards” activity to lead into forming tent groups, continue research in computer lab, HOMEWORK – one page research project is due Monday 4/25, stoves need to be brought in by this Friday (we need 10 total)

Friday – ADSTG # 1 !!!  we will all gather in the classroom at 10:30 am, half the group will head to Movement climbing gym and climb from 11 am – 1 pm and then head to North Boulder Park for some games including knot tying relays, the other half will do the reverse and climb from 1 pm – 3 pm, then we will all meet back at school for a quick debrief, HOMEWORK – research page due Monday 4/25

Monday – presentation of learning (POL) reminders, inspirations, final preparations, goal today is for each student to earn their portfolio signature and feel completely ready for their POL, if time – groups will share a “tableau” from their presentation for the class to enjoy and share feedback about, HOMEWORK – practice, practice, practice POL and bring all necessary materials for a successful presentation

Tuesday – Wednesday – PRESENTATIONS OF LEARNING – SENSATIONAL SYMBIOTIC SIMULATIONS!!!  Parents welcome and encouraged to come!

Tuesday – start with computer simulation of cow eye dissection, actual COW EYE DISSECTION with a partner, debrief and clean up, HOMEWORK – none

Wednesday – focus on skeletal and muscular systems, start with outline of body, label and learn all major bones of skeleton – notes in spiral, discussion of three muscle types, color and label major muscle groups, microscope work with muscle types – sketches and notes in spiral, HOMEWORK – review of notes

Animal Planet – Integrated (life science)

Monday – start our focus on the human body with an exploration of the circulatory system, notes on heart rate and life span of various organisms – we are on the lookout for a pattern, double pump activity which will lead us to the blood flow through each part of the heart, kids complete a diagram by labeling and coloring to accurately show how the blood moves from the body, through the heart, to the lungs and back, HOMEWORK – parent signature on permission slip for blood lab coming up Friday

Tuesday – no Animal Planet due to CSAP schedule

Wednesday – continue our tour through the circulatory system by taking a close look at a SHEEP HEART, students will work in partners to find all the important parts and use this realistic model to get a deeper understanding of blood flow through the human heart, HOMEWORK – permission slip

Thursday – play two circulation games to cement knowledge of heart parts and blood flow, first we will “tap it out” – teams must work together to go through each part of the heart in correct blood flow order (some friendly competition for the best time will be involved), then we head outside to actually follow the path and “move” oxygen rich blood through the body and back to the lungs to re-supply, HOMEWORK – permission slip must be turned in to fully participate in tomorrow’s “finger pricking” activity

Friday – guest speaker from Bonfils blood donation center gives a presentation on the parts of blood, different types of donation, and blood types, the much anticipated BLOOD LAB – students will have the opportunity to prick their fingers (or have Ms. Rundell help them out) and follow simple steps to discover their blood type, we will compare our class data to the “big picture” presented by Bonfils, HOMEWORK – none
